Spartan Super Virginia Review

Spartan Super Virginia Review

TeamFoFSuperThis past weekend, myself and a few teammates tackled the Super Spartan at the Wintergreen Ski Resort in Virginia nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains. This is the second of three Spartan race that we planned to do this year on our way to completing the Trifecta.

I didn’t really know what to expect other than that this was going to be one tough race.  Apparently it is THE hardest Super that they offer.  SpartanSuperTKDKThe entire race is nothing but endless hills. Up, down, up, down, and then up again.  But they really kept it interesting.  A good amount of the race was spent in dense woods where we had to traverse slippery rocks and wallow through mud.  The course always kept us guessing as to what obstacle would come next. Obstacles ranged from wall climbs, bag/log/bucket full of rocks/stone carries, to a ridiculously long mud crawl under barbed wire on a steep incline.  The weighted carries would have been crazy over flat distances, but these were up and down the slippery slopes.  Each step took careful planning and caution.  The hardest carry was a 5 gallon bucket filled to the brim with rocks which we had to carry all the way to the top of a steep hill and back.

SpartanSuperTKAKIt was really odd, but when we were going straight up hill, we wished for a downhill and when we were going downhill wished we were going up. To add to the complexity of the course, the day was really cloudy and a thick fog was hanging over the course and it only got worse as the day went on.   Plus, it rained pretty hard on and off.  It was just a non-stop quad killer. The last mile of the race was one obstacle after another, the hardest of which was the barbed wire mud crawl.  The last Spartan race that we did had a nice, flat crawl, but this one was on a steep hill and it was hard to keep from sliding, especially at the end. That was quickly followed by the rope climb.  When we crossed the finish line it was difficult to see even 50 feet ahead, but we had finished.  A huge sense of accomplishment follows finishing a race like this.  There is nothing like setting out to do something you have never done or even thought you could do and doing it.  We are looking forward to the next race, the Carolina Spartan Beast on October 25th.  This will complete the Trifecta of doing a Sprint, Super, and Beast in the same calendar year.  These races ROCK. I encourage you to try one.  And you don’t have to be super duper fit to try one either.  We saw fit people struggling and non-fit people giving it their all.  You truly don’t know until you’ve tried it.

Body Beast Build Phase Review

YOTBThe Year of the Beast Challenge Group is going really strong. We have a great group that is really bringing it! We are in the 6th week and halfway through the Bulk Phase so I thought I’d share my review of the Build Phase.


Prep Week (1 week)

The group leaders decided that a prep week would be beneficial to preview the workouts, get a sense of the pace, and set a baseline of how heavy we could lift.  I had already completed one round of Body Beast so I knew what to expect and what weights to use.  It was a great week to get back in the swing of things though and start focusing on nutrition. I decided during this week that I would increase my caloric intake to 2400 cals/day.  I had been eating less than 2000 cals for quite a while and I wanted to start eating more to boost my metabolism. Overall, the prep week was awesome and it got me really pumped to officially start the program.


Build Phase (3 weeks)

These workouts are crazy good. I haven’t been this sore in a long time.  The pacing, set layout, and schedule are all awesome.  It’s a six days on, one day off type of workout with the rest day sort of floating through the week.  I feel as though I am getting stronger everyday and am thoroughly enjoying myself.  I’ve heard from some folks that they think that Sagi gets old quick, but I really enjoy his comments and banter with the crew.  You can really tell that he is being himself and isn’t scripted in any way.  I’ve always been a fan of Tony Horton and his jokes, but Sagi is hilarious in his own weird way.  I think most of it has to do with English not being his first language.

I really enjoyed the Build Phase workouts (although I really like the Bulk Phase so stay tuned for more on that).  I think I am finally getting used to eating more calories. The first week I was seeing the scale move up, but decided to stay the course.  From then on I have been either steadily maintaining or even losing weight which is right where I want it. I did lose a little bit of body fat through this phase and expect the trend to continue throughout the rest of the program. I would really like to see myself sub 10% after this first 90 days.

Overall, Body Beast is not a beginner workout in my opinion.  It’s a pretty intense, hard-core lifting program and those who may have not lifted before might hurt themselves with bad form.  Sagi does a good job of demonstrating how to do each exercise, but it might be hard for a novice.  One of the greatest things I like about Body Beast is that it isn’t just for gaining muscle.  If you adjust your diet accordingly, you can actually burn a heck of a lot of fat in the process.  Some people also get concerned with Body Beast’s lack of cardio, but Beast Cardio is a crazy hard routine.  Plus, you can always go with the Lean schedule which incorporates more cardio. Or you could just do some T25 or Insanity on the side.  I am really excited to see what the Bulk Phase has in store for me and will keep you all updated on the progress.

Positive Self-Talk

I am a huge believer in self-talk. There’s nothing wrong with carrying on a dialogue with yourself.  Self-talk can be a very power tool for your controlling your emotions and providing yourself with motivation.  It’s a surefire way to boost your successes and minimize your failures.  Positive self-talk can break down mental barriers and provide you with the confidence you need to overcome many obstacles.  How can you apply positive self-talk to your health and fitness goals? It’s actually really easy.

Replace Negative with Positive

What if you got in the habit of telling yourself

  • It’s too hard
  • I’m out of shape
  • It’s too heavy

What do you think would happen? Do you think that you would have any success with changing your health and fitness habits? Probably not.  And the longer you fill your mind with the negative, the more apt you are to give up all together. The unfortunate thing about negative thoughts is that they seem to build on one another. One negative thought turns into two and so forth. Then it becomes really easy to lose focus of your goal and wallow in self pity and doubt.  Instead of filling your head with rubbish that only serves to demean and degrade, lift yourself up with positive thoughts.

Change those negative thoughts to

  • It’s too hard  I GOT THIS!
  • I’m out of shape I’m HEALTHY and LEAN!
  • It’s too heavy I’m a BEAST!

Adopting positive thoughts will help keep you on the road to success and minimize your failures on the way towards your goal.  One of the best ways to talk advantage of self-talk is to say them out loud.  There’s something about saying things aloud that bears more weight than inner self-talk. I talk to myself all the time during my workouts and I find that when I do I am able to lift more weight, perform more reps, and push myself harder.

So next time when you mind tries to feed you garbage that hinders your goals take out the trash and replace those negative thoughts with positive, goal-driven, uplifting thoughts. And don’t forget to BRING IT and NEVER GIVE UP!
